朝食にオートミール4袋を食べる。
食料は、バナナとグラノーラバーが2本ずつ、そしてミスターヌードルズが数袋だけしか残っていない。
レイクルイーズまでは77km、素敵な数字だ。いい日になるに違いない。
着いたらスーパーに買い出しに行こう。
この辺の写真は悪くない。
However after taking these, it turned to be miserable weather. Snow, blizzard, extremely cold... I really was not in mood to take even one picture. :( Despite the awfully coldness days, I've lost my left glove which my parents had presented me. Therefore I wore two short socks on my hand. Better than nothing, right?
んですが、このあと雪が降り出し吹雪となり尋常じゃない寒さとなります。
とても写真を撮ろうなんて気にはならなかった…
数日前に左手用の手袋を落としてしまったらしいので、短い靴下を重ね履きして代用する。
手袋、むかし両親がプレゼントしてくれたのになあ…
On the way in the blizzard, "Hang in there!" a car driver did "Honk-honk cheering," and a passenger was trying to take my picture using iPad, so I smiled and struck a pose. Mmm, how come I showed this "hospitality" although I was like dying...?
「がんばって！」
雪が吹きすさぶ中を走っていると、ぷっぷチアリングを受ける。
後ろの席の女性がiPadで写真を撮ろうとしていたので、笑顔でポーズを決めて応じた。
…死にそうなほど辛いってのに、何でこんなサービス精神を見せてるんだ、僕は。
何はともあれ、レイクルイーズに到着。
…どのような天気だったか、ご推察いただけますかな。
自転車がこんなになるような状況で走ってはいけない。正直、自殺行為である。
To a hostel. A girl at a reception talked rapidly, so I couldn't understand well. Power... what? I'm freezing, please, chop chop...
今日はホステルに宿泊。
受付のねーちゃんが早口で、なに言ってるかよく分からない。
パワーが何とか言ってたけど、適当に聞き流した。
寒いから早くしてくんないかしら…
4人部屋。
先客が一人、ちょっと無愛想な感じの兄ちゃんがリンゴを齧っていた。
「パワーアウテージについて何か言ってたかい？」
あぁ、ねーちゃんが話してたのはそれか。
パワーアウテージ、停電である。道理で廊下が暗いと思った。
特に何も聞いてないなあ、と答える。事実だ。
When I came back to the room after taking a shower with my small flashlight, the guy was out. Soon, a middle-aged-to-elderly man came in. At the first sight, I knew that he is a really nice person. "Namae ha nan desuka? ("What's your name?" in Japanese)" Wow, you know Japanese! "Sukoshi dake (A little)" Danny said he came here for snowboarding this day and the next day. "Do you want?" What he gave me is... a can of beer! Oh my gosh, precious! "Kampai! (Cheers)" We drunk and talking, and he offered me something when he heard that I'm cycling across Canada, "You are coming to Calgary, right? Then stay at my house. No fee, I can feed you, and you can get good sleep." ...What, seriously?! It would be awesome! "Sure, just visit me." Thank goodness, I met St. Dan here, in Lake Louise.
フラッシュライトの明かりの下でシャワーを浴びて部屋に戻ると、兄ちゃんはいなかった。
と、すぐに初老の男性が入ってくる。3人目の客だ。
見るからに良い人オーラを発している彼は、ダニーと名乗った。
「ナマエハ ナンデスカ？」
おぉ！日本語を知ってるんですね。
「スコシダケ」
気さくなダニーは、今日あすとスノーボードをしに来たらしい。
「飲むかい？」と言って彼が差し出したのは、何と缶ビール！
ありがたくちょうだいする。「カンパイ！」
自転車旅行の話やら何やらしていると、
「カルガリーにも寄るんだろう？じゃウチに泊まったら良いよ」
…ふえぇ？マジすか、いいんすか！
「もちろんだよ。宿泊費もかからないし食事も提供できるし、良い睡眠がとれるだろ？」
天・使・降・臨。
噂に聞いていたお泊まりイベントが早くも、こんなところで発生するとは！
いや本当に、ありがとうございます、それは超絶助かります！とお礼を言うと、
いいんだよ、とダニーは笑っていた。
The door was opened and a young guy came in. Again, at the first sight, I knew that he is a really great person. Nick is also here for snowboarding. Right, the person who is cycling in this area in this season is only me... Danny and Nick were talking about something difficult while I was using my laptop. Apparently it was about Nick's job. ...Hmm? I think I forgot something... ah, grocery shopping. Asked the receptionist about a store and the closing time, "Unfortunately they are closed because of the power outage." Drat, it's not just this hostel, but all in this town... the bananas and granola bars have already been eaten up, okay, the dinner will be just noodle, perhaps tomorrow's breakfast as well, that's life. Went back to the room.
Their discussion seemed to be more complicated. Then Nick said he was going to Banff to have dinner. "Can I give you a ride if you want to do shopping?" Wow thank you, it will be so helpful! We talked about lots of things mainly about Japan. He mentioned good points of Japan, such as "The Last Samurai" is a great movie, he likes Japanese food, Japanese is interesting because of their devotion like my journey. I said that I forgot the meaning of "devotion," then he explained it for me. Devotion, it is what Japanese do have. He was pretty surprised when I told that Japanese have to learn about 2,000 "ordinary" Chinese characters from grade 1 to 12. He told me that his mother tongue, Dutch, has just alphabet and the grammar is broken so that it is easy to be learn. I didn't know that, it is really interesting. When we got to Banff, Nick went to a richy restaurant, I went to a grocery store to buy foods which "Sale" tags on. You know, I am a poor traveler...
そんなやり取りをしていると、また扉が開く。
4人目の客だ。今度は見るからに好青年である。
こちらのニックもまた、スノーボードをしに来たらしい。
この時期にこの場所を自転車で旅するアホは、僕だけだ。
僕がラップトップをいじっている間、ダニーとニックはなにやら小難しい話をしていた。
よく聞き取れなかったけど、ニックの仕事に関することらしい。
…あん？何か忘れてないか。
あそうだ、買い物行かなくちゃ。ねーちゃんに場所と閉店時間を聞いておこう。
「残念だけどやってないのよ、停電だから」
うげー、このホステルだけじゃなくて、このへん一帯だったんすか…
バナナもグラノーラバーも、日中に消費している。
今夜は具なしヌードル、復旧しなければ明日の朝も具なしヌードルか。
まーそんなこともあるのねと思い部屋に戻る。
二人の小難しい話は盛り上がり、中～大難しくなっているようだった。
と、ニックは夕食を食べるべく、バンフまで車を飛ばすという。
「買い物したいんなら、乗せて行こうか」
うおー、助かる！ありがたく連れて行ってもらうことにする。
道中、ニックと色々な話をした。主に日本について。
ラストサムライは素晴らしい映画だったとか、日本食は好きだよとか、日本の良いところを挙げてくれる。
「君の旅もそうだけど、日本人はデボーションがあるよね、興味深いよ」
デボーション…聞いたことあるけど、何だっけ。意味を忘れちゃったな。
というと、丁寧に説明してくれた。
devotion、献身とか傾倒とかいう意味だ。実ではなく質を取る姿勢、といったところか。
「アメリカ人だったらキャンピングカーでびゅーんだからね」
日本人は常用漢字だけで2,000文字も覚えなきゃいけないんだぜと言うと、ニックは目を丸くしていた。
彼の母語であるオランダ語はアルファベットだけだし、文法もめちゃくちゃで何通りも言い方がある、
だから学びやすいんだ。と教えてくれた。おもしろい、それは知らなかった。
バンフに到着すると、ニックはちょっと高めのレストランへ、貧乏旅行者の僕はスーパーでセール品を買い込んだ。
There was still dark in Lake Louise area. When I started cooking outside, Nick came up to help me out with his flashlight. What a kind man, I really like him!
ホステルに戻るも、停電は復旧していなかった。
ヌードルを作るべく外で作業を始めると、手伝うよと言ってニックがライトで照らし続けてくれた。
何て良い人なんだ…
闇に包まれたキッチンで、ネギ入り豚肉ラーメンを食す。
I noticed. The reason I had to surpass the horrible Rockys biking is to encounter Danny and Nick here. Finally my misfortune turned to fortune on this brilliant day.
僕は気付いた。
泣きそうになるほどキツかったロッキー越えは、ダニーとニックに出逢うためにあったのだと。
ようやく禍が福に切り替わった、素敵な一日だった。

まだウィンタースポーツを楽しんでいるのか！
北海道でも今年は雪が多いので、5月11日までスキー場がOpenしている所があるって聞いたよ。
しかし良き人々に出会えて感謝だね
