【Day12】 Next stop, Wild Rose Country -新州突入- [1st/May]

It is about 120km distance from Valemount to Jasper, and there must be ups. There was one option which is staying at a campground 40km from here tonight, and climbing up the mountain 80km tomorrow. But Sandra said "It is like the road from Blue River to here. There is a few hard points, however basically gentle long slopes." Alright then, I can make it in one day. Do not choose easy way.

Leaving Valemount,

Passed the gates,

Beware.

Took a look this fall, as taking a rest.

Not bad.

I am not afraid of you any longer. Do not underestimate me.

Banana break at a rest area.

The second province, Alberta.

Oops, time zone. I lost one hour... crap.

Should pay fee to enter the national park. Car drivers pass through without paying, probably saying "I'm just going to Edmonton" or something like that, but cyclists cannot use that "tequnique"... so I had to pay $10. This kind of system must be changed somehow, right?

Jasper, my old stamping ground. I've lived here for half a year. Nostalgic? Actually no, haha.

Went to A&W, however a no smiling staff told me "We have no Wi-Fi." Damn.

Substitute, Tim Hortons. They certainly have Wi-Fi. Boston Cream Donut, mmm, yum. While I was using my laptop, "Are you Japanese? (in Japanese)" I was asked. She had noticed my partner (Rilakkuma) and a Japanese flag, therefore the Japanese woman got curious. She said she'd lived in the east of Canada, and there are fabulous places. Sounds good. Chatting in Japanese for a little while made my mind soothed.

Mutsuko

* Tim Hortons(ティムホートン[ズ]) …

Went to a church I was expecting to stay, but there were bright lights. Geez, this's like "Find me" Let me see other church... ah, here is a good one, nobody can see me.

Luckily there was a thick wooden board. Although I though it would be cold in Jasper, it was better than Whistler or 100 Mile House. Elk strolls in this town. They hardly scare people, but please do not visit my tent... I went to sleep.

【Day11】 (・囚・) -Forget about everything and run away- [30th/April]

The staff came up to me to say "Did you sleep well?" Yes! I got deep sleep because of the sleeping bag you lent me. "That's great, take care"

It's about time to snack. Is there a rest area or something I can stop by?

Wait, I can see something black moving around over there. Perhaps it is...? A truck driver stopped and said "There is a bear. Just wait here for a little while" ah, I knew it. Okay, good timing anyways, snack time.
...about 10minutes later, the bear is still strolling around. Hmm, I'm in a pickle... oh? a car is coming back. It stopped before me and the driver said "You're waiting the bear leaving, right? Give you a ride." Awesome, thank you! I loaded my bicycle on the car, and rode on the passenger seat. "I don't wanna see bear scares people." You're a lifesaver. "Where are you going?" Just cycling across Canada. "Really? You want to ride a little while?" Oh no, that's kind of you, but I gotta bike! "Okay, good luck!" I got off the car where the bear was 300m away. That's really awesome of people living in Canada that doing these things like "as usual."

Ugh, got hungry again.

Great rest area. Sitting on a railroad tie, and having a banana.

Oh my goodness, I almost got run over...

Valemount.

Never seen this sign before. Interesting, eh?

I met Sandra when I went to the visitor centre to ask about campgrounds. "They open from May... means tomorrow, but still closed. But here is open." Great. Is there an all-you-can-eat restaurant, by any chance? "It's only weekends, not Wednesday. For getting calories?" Haha, yes. Alright then, I will just cook. She also told me where a grocery store, and places I can buy patches for bicycle are.
So is Susan in Lillooet, staff working at visitor centre speaks very clearly. I mean, those who have a listening problem, like me, can understand easily what they say because of using easy words and speaking slowly. Amazing hospitality, isn't it?
Thank you so much, Sandra! You helped me a lot. I sincerely enjoyed talking with you and staying in Valemount! :)

Sandra and me. Pretty tired face, huh...
By the way, I haven't shaved my face from the beginning of this journey. Behold how it will have grown by the end!
By the way No2, my costume is like this since being in professional-like clothes is not my cup of tea. Tenugui (Japanese useful handkerchief) and a helmet on my head, a meshed shirt I bought on sale and a jumper to adjust body temperature, and pants which I had to purchase when I started working at an inn in Jasper.
By the way No3, she said she wants to introduce me on the Facebook page of the visitor centre. I haven't been looking for it, so please let me know if anyone find it.

Nice shopping area.

Grassy ground is the best for tenting.

A woman with an RV parking nearby my site came up to me, "Traveling by bicycle?" Yes, cycling across Canada. "That's impressive! You can tell it to your grandchildren." Haha, I'm flattered. Lots of guys have done it though. "Do you have a companion?" He's my partner, I showed Rilakkuma (huge stuffed bear). "Cute! Well, is it for charity or something?" I've been asked this before. Apparently one Japanese guy did it after Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami (2011.03.11), but for me, just for fun, and if I must say... to surpass myself, you know.

This is camping-ish dinner, right? 2packs of Mr.noodles, 1 small onion and 9 sausages. Really yum! Cannot believer this feast for just 3bucks. Although I thought the leftover would be tomorrow's breakfast, I just ate up.

Congrats, the odo is now over 1,000km. You've proceeded to the next level! I haven't been able to have time to practice guitar though.

【Day10】 曲がったことが大嫌い -From Clear to Blue- [29th/April]

Today's destination is Blue River. Simple, but beautiful name. Hope there is a grocery store so that I can get some foods. I just have some bananas and pasta.

Nice flat road.

Brilliant sky.

Amazing view.

Fabulous scenery.

Mmm, which adjective should I use?

Riverside.

Drive with caution. For what? For 120km?

…?

Arrived Blue River.

I expected it was a pretty big city, but... it's not. The population is a few hundred, it seems like a rest area for drivers.

The only one campground in the town. It says "Open," but no staff is here... well, why don't I just set up a tent? Before that, go to the gas station at the entrance of town to get water.

There was a staff when I got back to the campground. "It will be cold" he said and lent me a sleeping bag for free! Thank goodness, I haven't slept well because of coldness, but I finally can get deep sleep tonight.

Sandy ground. Uh-huh, pretty comfortable.

【Day9】 Half day off! -Yeah!

Today should be half day off, because I've been pretty tired and cold, and haven't taken hot shower for 5 days... I will just jump in a campground which is the closest.

Right after I started, there was a long downhill. It seems I stayed on the top of the hill. That's why it was cold, hmm, stupid...

Hope I never use it...

When the hill ends, got to Little Fort. As I thought, it is a teeny tiny town... well, village? By the way, there are plenty of "blah blah fort" as place name. Does it mean those were really "fort" in the past? I have no knowledge, so please tell me if you know about it.

Fort=砦、だからね。学がないから知らないけど、ご存知の方いたら教えてください。

Looooong flat road from Little Fort. Guess there are longer ones in the eastern.

Arrived Clearwater. Where are you, campground? Wanna take a rest, wanna take a rest!

The visitor centre was closed. Okay then, A&W as a substitute. Yummy burger.

代打・A&W。

A well-built guy talked to me in front of the shop, "Are you going to this way?" Yup. "I once have biked from Edmonton. I'm sure the wind direction is great on your way!" Sounds good, thanks.

Found a campground. A son of the owner, looks a high school student, introduced around there. Can I take a shower? I asked, then he went to a storage room and said "Is this what you want?" ...oh man, it is "shovel," I said "shower"... You see how awful my oral communication skill is...

It's been a while, hot shower!

Gotta do laundry.

Let me say... miso soup pasta? using two packs of instant miso soup which my coworker gave me when I worked in Jasper. Ah, yummy. It was a good day.
